I cited in the review of Redmi 4A (Full Review) smartphone, a smartphone is more about the user experience that it offers to its consumers in contrast to its price tag or the set of features offered by it. While to some it’s the numbers or the crammed spec sheet that matters, to the rest it’s the unforgettable user experience that matters the most. The Spice V801 is such a device. It’s been a long-time since Spice introduced any smartphone in the Indian smartphone market. Recalling the memories when it was only the Indian brands manufacturing products for its consumers had a charm in itself. Although, today’s smartphones offer much more what the users ever received in budget category devices, the Spice V801 on the other hand shifted the bar to greater heights.
We tested the Spice V801 device for nearly a week, and in such a brief testing period these are the things that we noticed.
The Spice V801 smartphone features a plastic body design. There are three capacitive touch buttons placed on the bottom front side of the smartphone while the rear panel holds no keys. The volume rockers and power key are placed on the right side of the smartphone and are very handy during regular use.
“I really liked the idea of using the home button with a built-in LED notification light”
Starting with the front side of the smartphone first. The Spice V801 looks like any other budget priced smartphone. However, the company had actually spiced up the design with gold finish around the edges that certainly differentiates the V801 from any other budget smartphone.
The rear side is divided into two halves with the top half made up of smooth rubberised plastic that helps the device from receiving any accidental scratches. While the bottom half is constructed of typical plastic finish. The best part is both the top and bottom rear panels received no scratches even when put under rigorous testing.
The top panel is detachable and can be used to insert SIM and Memory card. Although the idea seems dated considering the modern tray designs, however it surely makes SIM removal easier.
The smartphone also packs a USB 2.0 port for charging and data syncing along with the option to connect 3.5mm jack for audio output.
“The Spice V801 also comes with a dedicated memory card slot”
The capacitive keys are good and responsive under most situations.
Best of all is the fingerprint scanner which is not offered in any other similarly priced device and works accurately in regular use. It may never disappoint you with slow speeds.
As I told you before, we tested the Spice V801 smartphone for nearly a week. In which the smartphone was used as a primary device. Apart from a couple of lags that took place during initial set-up it never felt offbeat using a Spice smartphone once again.
The Spice V801 is running on a custom Skin on top of the Android version 6.0 Marshmallow. The skin is swift and super responsive. Although, a couple of times it felt like the skin is dense considering the spec sheet of the smartphone, but the device never responded in an unusual manner during the testing period.
Regular social media applications like Facebook, Whatsapp come pre-installed inside the smartphone and run without breaking a sweat on the device. Word, PDF documents and Emails worked fantastically.
If we talk about the experience of the smartphone to a consumer who hardly reads mails and documents ever. The Spice V801 is a great choice for calling, messaging and social media.
So, if you’re a user who need a budget smartphone just for the sake of calling, music, movies and some social media, Spice V801 could become a part of your bucket list this Diwali.
If we compare the Spice V801 to its competitors from Xiaomi and Gionee. The smartphone does offers neck-to-neck competition to its various counterparts. However, to take the performance a step ahead the company could’ve offered more storage along with better capacity battery and stronger chipset. Or it would’ve been better if the smartphone was announced with a stock Android operating system.
During the testing period we also played a couple of games like Ice hockey, chess and Ludo on the Spice V801 to test its gaming performance. The smartphone functioned well to run all the three games. The colors looked sharp and the response rate was also pretty swift.
Moving onto the camera division now. The Spice V801 is powered by an 8-megapixel rear and an 8-megapixel front camera. The rear camera captures photos with good details along with offering decent saturation levels. Front camera on the other hand also performed upto the mark with proper lighting and captured good selfies.
Under most of the lighting conditions both the rear and front camera did really well. Contrast levels and colors were accurate leading to good picture output. And if you’re a photography enthusiast, the camera is packed with loads of additional features like HDR, Filter, Countdown capture, Beauty mode, Panorama mode, Low Light mode and even the Pro photography mode.
Check out the camera samples below
The Spice V801 is powered by a 2700mAh battery which is non-removable. The battery easily delivers more than 1 day of battery life and delivers an unmatchable standby time. Although there’s no fast charging and the smartphone may take upto 3-hours to charge 100-percent, its more or less the same with all the other smartphones under this price tag. The Spice V801 was mostly used for calling and social media during testing period, and it always delivered more than one day of battery life. So, no worries only when the battery is fully charged.
However, the best part is that even though there’s no fast charging, the smartphone delivered a battery life of more than one day in regular use. And the standby time was fantastic delivering upto 3 days of battery life.
The Spice V801 is a stylish looking smartphone launched by the company after a long time. The smartphone comes packed with a great set of camera performance, fast & accurate fingerprint sensor and also contains enough juice to last the smartphone more than a day. However, the absence of fast charging could act as a downside for the smartphones success. In the offline market however, the Spice V801 has great a potential to reach consumers across the nation.
